I have seen this in computing, and bratnfoimoiics, with the small bio-tools companies. Their tool becomes their raison d'etre, and they convince a few people of the value of it. I am sure it is a common problem across multiple industries. A platform requires evangelism and education to gain market traction. Or you can go the open source route and gain massive adoption (very rare) to get the base you need to go forth.I agree though, it is not viable business model in most cases. My perception is that the architecture approach raises barriers to adoption as it makes adoption harder. The onus is upon the purchaser to build the rest of the infrastructure. Works great when there is trust and cooperation between the purchaser and the supplier. Not so great when it requires the additional efforts of selling the architecture and evangelising the benefits. Not that the architecture increases risk, rather that the lack of a complete product makes the sales job to the customer, and the customers sales job to their management/money people that much harder.
