The liability ratio of Cheung Kong is just 4 percent while that of Hutchison Whampoa is 21 percent, quite low for such a large company, he said. http://www.ledo.pt/bd/down.asp?Х-t/Х t "Careful consideration will be made for staff. There will be no dismissals," Kedikoglou told state-run NET television, insisting the privatization plan had the full backing of the government's left-wing and center-left coalition partners. On a bridge of common cultural prosperity, Xi said China represents in an important way the Eastern civilization, while Europe is the birthplace of Western civilization. http://www.jcva.org/jcvamdb/eidt.asp?-֩`/ ֩` As a slew of big-name Japanese companies report improved quarterly earnings, one theme is taking the sheen off their rosy numbers: mainstay businesses are still struggling despite the perk from a weaker yen. The latest example came yesterday from Sony Corp. The Japanese electronics and entertainment company reported a 3.5 billion yen (US$35 million) April-June profit, a reversal from the 24.6 billion yen loss it suffered the previous year. Sony also saw some improvement in its smartphone and entertainment businesses. But it still had plenty of areas where it was lagging, such as digital cameras, video game machines and flat panel TVs. Its results would have been far different if it werent for the favorable exchange rate. A weak yen boosts the earnings of Japanese exporters, although Sony has been trying to reduce its vulnerability to exchange rate fluctuations in recent years when the yen was high. Quarterly sales jumped 13 percent to 1.71 trillion yen. But they would have slipped 3 percent if it werent for the declining yen, the Tokyo-based company said. In its electronics unit, Sony gained 19 billion yen in operating profit from a cheap yen. Other Japanese companies whose earnings fared better largely on a cheap yen included video-game maker Nintendo Co, automaker Honda Motor Co and Sonys archrival Panasonic Corp. Their test lies in how they hold up in global competition even without the benefits of a cheap yen. Daniel Loeb, a United States hedge fund manager renowned for shaking up Yahoo Inc, sparked a rise in Sonys share price by proposing a spin-off of up to 20 percent of its movie, TV and music division. He says the money should be used to strengthen Sonys ailing device manufacturing unit. Sony has said it is considering the proposal from Third Point hedge fund, led by activist investor and billionaire Loeb, but it has also asked for more time to look at all sides. Sony shares have risen after the Loeb proposal. Also helping Sonys bottom line for the latest quarter was its financial business, such as insurance, because of a recent recovery in the Japanese stock market, the company said. Sony, which makes the PlayStation 3 game machine and Walkman portable recorder, has suffered declining fortunes for several years. It got slammed in portable digital players by the iPod and iPhone from Apple Inc and intense competition from powerful South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co has also taken its toll. Sony sank to record losses for the fiscal year ended March 2012 the worst result in its more than six decade corporate history. The company barely dragged itself back into the black for the fiscal year ending in March. GENERAL Motors announced two more recalls, bringing to 4.8 million the number of cars, trucks and SUVs the automaker has called back for repairs in the past month. The string of recalls, topped by an ignition switch problem in compact cars now linked to 13 crash deaths, has embarrassed the company and sidetracked its new CEO, Mary Barra, who started work just over two months ago. GM has admitted knowing about the switch problem a decade ago, yet it didnt recall any cars until February. The recall delay has brought two congressional investigations and probes by the US Justice Department and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Late on Friday night, GM announced it would recall 490,000 late-model pickup trucks and SUVs because transmission oil cooling lines werent secured properly in their fittings. Transmission oil can leak from a fitting and hit hot surfaces, causing fires, the company said in a statement. GM said it knows of three fires and no injuries. The recall affects Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks from the 2014 model year, as well as 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs. All have six-speed automatic transmissions. The Silverado is GMs top-selling vehicle and an important profit center for the company. The GMC Sierra also is among GMs top sellers. Dealers will inspect the transmission oil cooling line fittings and make sure theyre securely seated, at no cost to owners. Also on Friday night, GM announced the recall of 172,000 Chevrolet Cruze compact cars because the right front axle shaft can fracture and separate while being driven. The recall affects cars from the 2013 and 2014 model years equipped with 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engines. If a shaft fractures, the wheels would lose power without warning and the cars would coast to a stop. GM says it has warranty reports of several dozen shaft fractures. It is not aware of any crashes or injuries. Dealers will replace the shafts free of charge. The recall allows dealers to resume selling affected Cruzes. GM issued a stop sale order on the cars on Thursday night. The recall also covers about 2,500 replacement shafts used to fix manual transmission Cruzes that were recalled last September. In all, GM has recalled 4.8 million vehicles since last month, 2 million more than the company sold last year in the US. A gloomy outlook from Caterpillar, the world's largest construction equipment company, tugged the stock market lower yesterday.
